Sri Lanka vs Australia match end on a tie due to rain
COLOMBO: At R.Premadasa Stadium on Saturday, the World Cup Group ‘A’ match between Sri Lanka and Australia was abandoned because of rain.
Earlier, cheered every run by a capacity crowd, where the cameras carefully scrutinised the stadium to spot a few Australian supporters, Sri Lanka started shakily. The Lankan opening pair Dilshan and Tharanga have put up 63, 76 and 72 in this tournament so far, and saw the Law of Averages catch up with.
Australia Captain Ricky Ponting said after losing the toss that they had to “do a good job with the new ball.” Well, Shaun Tait and Brett Lee were listening. Tait’s outswinger on the off-stump saw Dilshan presenting second slip a regulation practice catch. Four overs later, Thranga (31) cut Lee and the bullet landed in Smith’s hands.
Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena put on 44 in under nine overs as Sri Lanka pretended it had not lost a wicket. The only way they could be separated was the run-out route. Sure enough, Jaywardena, one of two most consistent performers in the past two years, pushed Watson towards cover and ran. Smith, the bullet stopper, this time propelled the ball with precision and a scrambling Jayawardena saw the ball home in on the target.
The additional responsibility that the loss placed on Sangakkara meant that scoring slowed down to a trickle or less. The next boundary took five overs to come and the 25 runs required for the team 100 took just over 8 overs. Samaraweera, who survived a close lbw call (the UDRS showed the ball hitting the stumps; but it was an on-field call) and a patient Sangakkara took the team to 129 for 3 in 30 overs. Australia had lost some of its early advantage.
Including Ajantha Mendis, Sri Lanka is playing three spinners, whom the Australians have played very little of. There’s also Muralitharan, who has done remarkably well. But his worst ODI figures (1-99; at SCG, February 2006) is also against the Australians.
