Suu Kyi makes Myanmar parliamentary debut
Naypyidaw, Myanmar. Myammar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi made her debut in the current fourth session of Myanmar’s House of Representatives (Lower House) in Nay Pyi Taw Monday, four days after the session began last Wednesday.
Suu Kyi, whose unswerving campaigning saw her locked up for years by the former junta and earned her a Nobel Peace Prize, appeared calm as she arrived to take her seat as an elected politician for the first time in the capital Naypyidaw.
The debut of Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), in the parliament came after her return from a 17- day tour to five European countries — Switzerland, Norway, Britain, Ireland and France on June 30. Earlier, she had also visited Thailand where she attended the World Economic Forum on East Asia.
NLD gave high priorities to three issues on its agenda, namely rule of law, internal peace and constitution amendments.
Suu Kyi has said time and again that she will cooperate with the 25-percent non-elected and directly-nominated military parliamentarians for the amendment of the constitution.
