Two Israeli Arabs Arrested on Charges of Spying, Contact with Hezbollah
Two Israeli Arabs have been taken into custody on suspicion of committing serious security offences including espionage and contact with a foreign agent from Hezbollah, said media reports.
Ameer Makhoul, 52, a well-known figure in the Arab community in Israel from Haifa, was arrested in his hometown last week in front of his wife and children, reports said.
He is suspected of being in touch with a Lebanese element of the Hezbollah terror group, espionage and contact with a foreign agent, said reports, adding that many computers were confiscated from his home.
Makhoul, arrested last Wednesday night, is the head of Ittijah, the umbrella organization for Arab community-based associations in Israel, and also heads the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee’s sub-committee for the defense of political freedoms, reports said.
A well-known figure among organizations around the world, he is an author, and the brother of former Knesset Member Issam Makhoul, and he has spoken against Israel several times in the past, said reports.
His remand has been extended by six days, reports said.
The other person to be taken into custody was Omar Said of Kfar Kanna and he was arrested in April, said reports.
The Shin Bet and the Israel Police’s international crimes investigation unit is looking into the matter and the investigation is being carried out with the attorney general and state prosecutor’s knowledge, said reports.
Said, Balad activist, was detained some two weeks ago at the King Hussein Border Crossing on his way to Jordan, said reports.
