Wagner rebellion : Mutiny opens ‘window of opportunity’ for Ukraine, says Kyiv
The head of the Wagner mercenary group vowed Saturday to “go to the end” to topple the Russian military leadership in the country. The Wagner Group chief, Yevgeny Prigozhin has also claimed the removal of Vladimir Putin as the President, saying there will be a new leader soon.
Since the declaration of the rebellion by the Wagner Group, military establishments of two cities have been captured and three Russian helicopters have been gunned down. “We will destroy everything that stands in our way,” the Wagner Group chief said in what could be easily termed as the most significant rebellion since Russia launched an offensive against Ukraine in February 2022.
Reacting to the Wagner Group rebellion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zekenskyy said it is clear that Russia is suffering from “full-scale weakness”.
“Russia’s weakness is obvious. Full-scale weakness,” Zelenskyy said, adding, “And the longer Russia keeps its troops and mercenaries on our land, the more chaos, pain and problems it will have for itself later. This is also obvious.”
The river transport in Moscow of Russia has been suspended for now. Meanwhile, A Wagner mercenary military column of vehicles drove past the Russian city of Voronezh on Saturday afternoon.
Wagner Group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is leading the rebellion against the Russian military, said that he and his men would not turn themselves in on the orders of President Vladimir Putin. “The president makes a deep mistake when he talks about treason. We are patriots of our motherland, we fought and are fighting for it. Nobody is going to turn themselves in and confess at the order of the president, the FSB [security service] or anyone else. Because we don’t want the country to continue to live any longer in corruption, deceit and bureaucracy,” he said.
In response to Vladimir Putin, the Wagner Group has rejected the President’s statement, saying that they are patriots. “Regarding the betrayal of the motherland, the president was deeply mistaken. We are patriots of our homeland,” Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said.
The Wagner Group has reportedly said that Russia will soon have a new President as the mercenaries move closer to Moscow in an attempt to capture it.
“In connection with the situation in Russia, this morning we held consultations with the prime minister and the ministry of defence, as well as with allies.
“The course of events beyond our eastern border is monitored on an ongoing basis.”
The governor of Russia’s Voronezh region said on Saturday that the army was taking “necessary military measures” in the region as part of a counter-terrorist operation declared after an armed mutiny by the Wagner mercenary group.
Earlier on Saturday, a Russian security source told Reuters that Wagner fighters had taken control of military facilities in the city of Voronezh, about 500 km (310 miles) south of Moscow. Reuters could not independently confirm that assertion
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said on Saturday his forces were ready to help put down a mutiny by Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and to use harsh methods if necessary.
Kadyrov in a statement called Prigozhin’s behaviour “a knife in the back” and called on Russian soldiers not to give in to any “provocations.”
