Went to Riyadh only because Pakistan is desperate: Imran Khan
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said that he attended the Riyadh investment conference that many world leaders and corporates have skipped following the mysterious killing of the dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi at Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul, only because his government was “desperate” to seek financial help from them.
Khan had left Pakistan for Saudi Arabia on Monday to attend the investment conference. “The reason I feel I have to avail this opportunity is that in a country of 210 million people right now, we have the worst debt crisis in our history,” he said during an interview with Middle East Eye (MEE) in Medina on Monday.
“Despite my concern over Khashoggi’s death, I could not skip the conference as we’re desperate for possible Saudi loans to shore up Pakistan’s economy,” Khan told the interviewer before leaving for Riyadh.
While addressing the Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference in Riyadh on Tuesday, Khan highlighted some of the key challenges faced by his government and his plans to tackle them.
“We are in desperate need of new loans to pay-off our previous loans. We have approached the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and our friendly countries to ease the current economic situation faced by our country,” Khan said.
He warned that the next three to six months will be difficult for his country. “Our institutions were destroyed as corrupt people were in top positions in the past but we have taken measures to strengthen our institutions besides to increase our exports,” he said.
“We need to increase foreign reserves with remittances from the 8 to 9 million Pakistanis working abroad, need to give incentives to exporters and create opportunities for investment,” Khan added.
Maintaining that Pakistan’s two biggest problems were corruption and poverty, Khan said his government has sought the help of the Chinese government to end corruption and poverty in Pakistan. “In the past five years, China has clamped down on corruption and we have to look for ways to curb it as white collar crime is hard to convict. Secondly, they have pulled out a large number of people out of poverty.”
Responding to a question on relations with neighbouring countries, the PM said that Pakistan’s relations especially with Afghanistan and India are crucial but expressed disappointment that New Delhi did not respond to Islamabad’s initiative for dialogue.
“We need stability and that means peace with all neighbours. Our problems right now are with Afghanistan and India but I am afraid we received no response from India, in fact, we got rebuffed by New Delhi,” he reportedly said
