Deepak Chahar created history on Sunday in Nagpur as he returned the best-ever bowling figures in T20Is beating the previous record held by Sri Lanka’s Ajantha Mendis. Chahar’s returns (6/7) were marginally better than that of Mendis (6/8) as the pacer blew away Bangladesh in the 3rd T20I of the series to help India win by a 2-1 margin. While doing so, Chahar also picked up a hat-trick – the 1st by an Indian in T20Is. Thus, Chahar’s feat now means that Indians can now lay a claim to a hat-trick in all 3 forms of the game.

Chasing 175 to win in Nagpur, Mohammad Naim (81) and Mohammad Mithun (27) laid a strong platform with a 98-run stand for the 3rd wicket that threatened to take the game away from India. This was after Deepak Chahar’s initial burst of 1-0-1-2 where he removed Liton Das (9) and Soumya Sarkar (0) off successive deliveries to lift India early. Unperturbed by the wickets, Naim and Mithun took their time initially before launching into the Indian attack. The duo was particularly severe on newbie Shivam Dube and Yuzvendra Chahal, who were bludgeoned for a total of 61 runs in their combined 1st five overs. In the process, Naim also completed his maiden T20I fifty off 33 balls as Bangladesh crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over. But the reintroduction of Chahar worked wonders for India as the seamer induced a top edge from Mithun to break the threatening stand. On the very next ball bowled by Dube, talismanic batsman Mushfiqur Rahim played on without scoring to put brakes on the scoring rate. That was just the start to a memorable evening for Dube, who followed his maiden wicket with 2 more in the 16th as he bowled Naim with a yorker before completing a brilliant caught and bowled of Afif Hossain (0) to leave Bangladesh reeling. Soon, Chahal returned to castle Mahmudullah (8) as the asking rate kept on climbing for Bangladesh. From there on, it was a matter of completing the formalities for India as Chahar and Khaleel closed out the victory without any further drama.
