Guangzhou: PV Sindhu was ecstatic after winning her maiden gold medal of 2018 by defeating Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-19, 21-17 in the women’s singles final of BWF World Tour Finals
2018 at Guangzhou, China. Sindhu had lost at this very stage last year when she was up against another Japanese – Akane Yamaguchi, she had lost a World Championships final to
Okuhara last year but on Sunday, Sindhu showed excellent mental fortitude and great skills to win the title.
“I feel really happy and I think I have no words because this is my first win in this year and everytime I have been coming to the final and losing. This will be the most memorable this year
because I think it was a good game and I’m really very proud. I think the year has ended on a beautiful note.
“I would like to thank each and everybody who have supported me and showed me their love. The fans here in Guangzhou have been fantastic. I would also like to thank my coaches, my
physios and my sponsors,” Sindhu said after the match.
As Sindhu won the last point, she dropped to her knees and clutched her face, much in relief and happiness. She had won silver medals at Rio Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth
Games, two World Championships, BWF Super Series Finals (last year) but they were all silver and her mental fortitude was questioned every time. This time she had gone all the way to
gold and said she would now say it out loud.
“Somewhere everyone has been asking me the same question and I think the question won’t come to me again that why all the time coming to the final and losing the final. In fact I think
now I would say I have won a gold and I am really very proud about it.
“It’s a very beautiful tournament I would say, even Nozomi played really well and BWF World Tour Finals, I would say last to last time I lost in the semi-finals, last time I was a runner-up
and this time I’m the winner so I think it’s definitely a beautiful tournament for me. Every point today was very important and there were long rallies so overall has been fantastic,” Sindhu
further said.
After her semi-final victory over Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon on Saturday, Sindhu had said, “I have improved a bit [in mental fortitude] because sometimes, couple of times before if I
was leading and say she would fight back and take the lead, I would get nervous but now I have been comparatively much more stronger. In that case, I tend to think and lose crucial
points.” She surely showed that improved mental strength on Sunday to win gold and bring up her 300th career win.
“Even though I was leading, she came back and fought hard. Sometimes I was actually remembering about the last Finals but I just thought that’s not the time and focussed again.
Otherwise it’s been very good.
“Whenever I play against Okuhara or Yamaguchi, I don’t think it’s going to be easy but every time we go on court, it’s going to be tough. Even though today it was two games but each
point was very important, we had like 30-40 strokes. So, I think talking about the Japanese, it’s not easy to play against them but I gave my 100 per cent and I just played all out today.”
Sindhu said she she might just go around Guangzhou and relish her victory as she did not get the time to see the place earlier. She then said that she is looking forward to playing in the
Premier Badminton League (PBL) back home.
“Not really [have not really got the time to go out] but I think I will enjoy the moment till I am here. May be go out for some time and enjoy my victory.
“We have an Indian league [PBL] so I will directly go there and I hope I do well there as well. I think that’s about it for the year.”
Sindhu said next year was the Olympic qualification year and she would sit and plan out the year with her coach later.
“Next year I think it will be the Olympic qualification year so we have to be fit and strategise and know what tournaments to play, we need to discuss and think about it.”
