Champion Rea claims 10th superbikes title
World Superbike champion Jonathan Rea has made history after completing a double success in Argentina on Sunday to extend his winning streak to 10 successive victories.
The 31-year-old, having also won the opening race on Saturday, came home first again in race two to clinch his fifth double on the spin for Kawasaki.
That saw him claim the record for the most consecutive wins in a season, eclipsing the nine won by Colin Edwards and Neil Hodgson.
Northern Irishman Rea, who wrapped up his fourth world title at Magny-Cours last month, finished the second race in a time of 35 minutes 13.668 seconds as he beat Xavi Fores (Ducati) by 3.3 seconds, while pole-sitter Marco Melandri (Ducati) completed the podium.
British trio Chaz Davies (Ducati), Rea’s Kawasaki team-mate Tom Sykes and Alex Lowes (Yamaha) were next to cross the finish line.
Turkey’s Toprak Razgatlioglu (Kawasaki) came home seventh, Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia) was a second further back, Michael van der Mark (Yamaha) crossed the line ninth and Jake Gagne rounded off the top 10 for Red Bull Honda.
