Atiq Ahmed Murder: CM Yogi orders UP police to stay alert; Warns rumour-mongers

Prayagraj police have said that the three men, arrested following the murder of former MP Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, have confessed that they had been following the brothers ever since they came to know they had been sent to police custody.

The assailants are also learnt to have told police that they wanted to kill Atiq and Ashraf to become famous.

The arrested persons have been identified as Lavlesh Tiwari (22), Mohit alias Sunny Puraney (23) and Arun Kumar Maurya (18). Police said that in the firing, Tiwari suffered a bullet injury in his right hand and he is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Prayagraj. The bullet was fired by his associates, police said.

In the attack, constable Man Singh also suffered a bullet injury.

The police team caught hold of the accused and took them into custody. “During questioning, the accused told us that they wanted to kill Atiq and Ashraf to become famous. The accused said they were sure they would benefit in future,” said an officer.The accused also told police that they were tracking Atiq and Ashraf’ movements and took their shot on Saturday evening.

The accused have been booked on charges of murder, attempt to murder, and sections of the Arms Act and Criminal Law Amendment Act in the case lodged at Shahganj police station. The FIR has been filed by station house officer (SHO) of Dhoomanganj police station, Rajesh Kumar Maurya.

According to the police, on Saturday evening, Atiq and Ashraf complained of uneasiness after which a team of 20 policemen, headed by SHO Maurya, took them to Moti Lal Nehru Zonal Hospital (Colvin) for a medical check-up. Others in the team included seven sub-inspectors and 13 constables.

Atiq and Ashraf were on a four-day police custody remand in the Umesh Pal murder case.

Police said that after seeing mediapersons at the hospital gate, Atiq and Ashraf started walking slowly. Near the hospital gate, Atiq and Ashraf stopped to speak to the media when the assailants opened fire at them.
