Birthday boy Abhimanyu Mithun bags historic hat-trick in Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Tamil Nadu
Karnataka cricketer Abhimanyu Mithun created history as he bagged a stunning hat-trick in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019 final against Tamil Nadu. The treble becomes all more special considering Mithun is celebration his 30th birthday today and his figures of 34/5 might play a pivotal role in helping his team lift the title at the end of the day.
With the hat-trick today, Abhimanyu has now become the first player to take three wickets in consecutive deliveries in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final. He is also the first player for Karnataka to take a hat-trick in List A cricket. He now has hat-tricks in both Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare.
Mithun’s first victim of the day was Veteran India Test opener Murali Vijay who departed for nought having faced two balls. A little bit of partnership was witnessed between Baba Aparajith (66) and Vijay Shankar (38) for the 6th wicket but Mithun marked a great return in the death overs to remove Shankar.
The all-rounder’s departure saw a complete lower middle-order collapse as he soon got rid of Shahrukh Khan, M Mohammed and Murugan Ashwin to complete his 5-wicket-haul.
The players Mithun dismissed to complete his maiden Vijay Hazare hat-trick were Shahrukh, Mohammed and M Ashwin. It was also his maiden 5-wicket-haul in the competition.
As for the match, Abhinav Mukund (85) led from the front to ensure Tamil Nadu reach a respectable total. Wickets kept falling at the other end of the pitch and it was only with Aparajith that he was able to form a partnership before being removed by Prateek Jain.
India Test spinner Ravichandran Ashwin surprisingly walked out to bat at No. 3 in the match but the move didn’t really help his team as he was dismissed by V Koushik on a paltry score of 8 runs from 13 balls.
Important contributions from Shankar and Shahrukh helped Tamil Nadu post a target of 253 for Karnataka to chase.
