All Indian Nationals Stranded in Kyrgyz Unrest Safely Evacuated
All Indian nationals who were trapped in violence-torn southern Kyrgyz cities of Osh and Jalalabad had been safely evacuated by air to capital Bishkek, said media reports citing sources at Ministry of External Affairs.
Reports said that the stranded Indians would come back to India over the next few days.
Earlier on Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that ‘about 116 Indian nationals are stranded in Kyrgyzstan. These include around 15 students in the city of Jalal-Abad and around 99 students, a professor and a businessman, in the city of Osh’.
“Our Mission was in close and regular touch with several of the Indian nationals, as well as with relevant departments of the Kyrgyz government, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and security agencies,” the statement said.
In active cooperation with Kyrgyz officials, the Indian mission in Kyrgyzstan succeeded in pulling the students and one professor of Indian Council for Cultural Relations out of Osho and in shifting them to Bishkek, reports said.
Yesterday, a national daily spoke to two medical students at the Jalal-Abad airport, who were waiting to be flown out.
“Police came to where we were staying and asked us to accompany them. We were told that they were operating on the instructions of the Indian Embassy. They drove us to the airport in a heavily-armed convoy at a great speed,” Sumita Murthy, who hails from Kerala, was quoted as saying.
“We live so close, we could have walked to the airport. But the situation is so bad that we could not venture out on our own,” she was quoted as saying.
