BJP Flays Govt for Reversing Policy to Pak; Walks out of LS

Stunned by the joint statement signed by India and Pakistan at Sharm-el-Sheikh which said that action on terrorism should not be linked with the composite dialogue, the BJP has asked the government as to what “prompted” it to change its stand towards Islamabad.

The BJP staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha on the issue soon after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh read out a statement on his meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani.

“You have delinked terrorism and the composite dialogue. Why have you taken seven months to decide on this?” queried BJP leader L K Advani before leading his party members out of the lower house of parliament.

Advani alleged that India had surrendered to Pakistan government’s insistence that action against terror groups should not be linked to the resumption to the dialogue process.

Manmohan Singh gave a summary of his visit to France and then to Egypt for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and said that “meaningful dialogue” with Pakistan will depend on Islamabad fulfilling its promise of acting against the perpetrators of the 26/11 terror strikes.

While in Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour, Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley said that the joint statement at Sharm-el-Sheikh in Egypt that “action on terrorism should not be linked to the composite duologue process and these should not be bracketed” has come as a “surprise and also disappointment”.

He termed it as a “reversal of India’s long standing policy” that as long as cross-border terrorism, state sponsored terrorism and terrorism emanating from Pakistani soil continue, there would not be any dialogue.

Jaitley wanted the government to make a statement on the issue demanding full discussion.
