Boy’s Death: Restrictions in Srinagar’s Old City Areas Continue
In view of a shutdown called by separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani in protest against a teenager’s death, restrictions continued for the third consecutive day today in the old city areas of Srinagar, said media reports.
Officials imposed restrictions in five police station areas to prevent more violence, reports said.
Geelani also called for a march to Saida Kadal locality of the city to express solidarity with the family of Tufail Ahmad Mattoo, a class 12 student who was killed during clashes between security forces and stone pelting mob in Friday’s protest.
Locals alleged that the boy was killed by security forces, while police said that he was mysteriously murdered and that they were looking into the matter.
The boy’s death evoked a spate of violent protests in Srinagar, road intersections in the old city areas blocked with barbed wires, barring movement of pedestrians and vehicles.
“The restrictions are in place to protect civilian life and property from damage by anti-social elements,” a police officer was quoted as saying.
While markets were shut in the uptown areas of Residency Road, Lal Chowk, Karan Nagar, Hari Singh High Street and Jehangir Chowk, private transport plied on the roads.
Educational institutions remained closed throughout the city.
