CBI’s Decision on Quattrocchi Challenged in SC

Hours after Interpol took off Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi from its red corner notice list following a communication from CBI, an advocate moved an application in the Supreme Court challenging CBI’s decision to give clean chit to Quattrocchi in a multi- crores Bofors pay off case.

Advocate Ajay Agrawal, in his urgent application, requested the apex court to stay the operation of any withdrawal of red corner notice against Quattrocchi who has not surrendered himself to Indian court in connection with the controversial bribery case.

Seeking issuance of red corner notice against Quattrocchi again, Agrawal said that the Interpol should be informed immediately so that Quattrocchi could be nabbed and produced before Indian court.

Agrawal had earlier moved the apex court in January 2006 against the defreezing of Quattrocchi’s bank account in London.

Meanwhile reacting to CBI’s giving clean chit to Quattrocchi, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI(M)) said that the subversion of justice will continue in the Bofors gun scam as long as a Congress-led government is in office.

“The withdrawal of the Interpol red corner notice against (Italian businessman) Ottavio Quattrocchi at the behest of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is another step to bury the Bofors gun case by the Manmohan Singh government,” the CPI(M) politburo said in a statement here.

“Coming in the wake of the failure to successfully prosecute all those involved in the bribery case, it is evident that as long as there is a Congress-led government in office, the subversion of justice will continue.”

The CPI(M) insisted that the Congress leadership should answer the people for “this cover-up”.
