Central Bank of India celebrating Centenary year
The country’s first Swadeshi bank “Central Bank of India” established on 21st December, 1911. CBI is now entering in its Centenary Year on 21st December, 2010. The Bank is planning to hold a series of functions to mark the landmark occasion. Besides cultural and customer felicitation programmes on the occasion, bank is also planning to organize Blood Donation Camps, Health Check-up camps etc. for the benefit of general public.
It was the first bank to be totally managed by Indians, founded by Sir Sorabji N. Pochkhanawala, in the backdrop of freedom struggle. In its century old existence, the bank has, from its humble beginnings in 1911 grown into a mammoth organization with a well linked network of branches and offices situated throughout the length and breadth of the nation. The bank has also pioneered several banking services in the country, becoming a trendsetter for such services.
Shri S. Sridhar, the present Chairman & Managing Director of the Bank, took over the reins in March, 2009 and launched ‘Operation Navchetna’ with an aim to rejuvenate the rank and file and reposition the bank among the top tier in the banking industry. In a short span, several initiatives in the form of new products and venturing into new areas of business were taken that have helped the Bank to show a vastly improved performance and profitability. In the last financial year, the bank’s business touched a new height and recorded highest ever profit in its 100-year history. Innovation is now an ongoing process in the bank and its product-mix and performance is poised to make banking more pleasant for its customers in the coming months.
