Cyclone Laila Crosses AP, Coastal Areas Get Inundated
The strong cyclonic storms Laila crossed the coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh near Bapatla in Guntur district this afternoon, said media reports.
According to officials, large storm surges were witnessed in the Bay of Bengal as the cyclone hit the coast about 50 kms from Bapatla town, reports said.
Strong wind speeding at 125 km/hour rigged havoc along and off the coast as the cyclone passed the coast after altering its course repeatedly during the last three days, said reports.
The villages along the coast were flooded because of storm surge of 1.5 to 2 metres, though the details of the damage caused by Lailay are yet not completely known, reports said.
According to Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, the cyclone would weaken after crossing the coast, said reports.
However, it forecast heavy rains across coastal Andhra and parts of Rayalaseema and Telangana regions during the next 36 hours, reports said.
Heavy rains and strong gales continued in the coastal region for the second consecutive day, paralysing normal life and badly affecting road and rail transport.
