Earthquake jolts North India, 2 killed
New Delhi: Two persons were killed, and 69 people including 32 students were injured in Jammu and Kashmir when an earthquake of moderate intensity shook parts of North India on Wednesday. Tremors were felt in national capital and adjoining satellite townships on Wednesday afternoon for the third time in a fortnight.
The quake happened at 12.27 pm and measured 5.8 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was near Kishtwar town in the Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh border region,” said RS Dattatreya, Director, Department of Seismology, India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The tremors were felt for about 20-25 seconds in the capital, Gurgaon and Noida. There were no immediate reports of any casualty or injury.
In Himachal Pradesh, the quake lasted nearly 30 seconds and was felt from tribal Lahaul and Spiti valley to foothills of Una.
Delhi had witnessed tremors on April 24 after a powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Lahore and the tribal areas. The epicentre of the quake lay around the Hindu Kush Mountains in the Pakistan-Afghanistan region. The quake measuring 5.7 on Richter scale rocked the Kashmir Valley.
On April 16, multiple tremors rattled North India after a massive earthquake measuring 7.5 on Richter Scale rocked Iran.
