End of ties with UPA? Mamata snubs PM again

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal chief minister once again set tongues wagging in the political circles as she abstained herself from receiving the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the airport.

Instead, the chief secretary, ministers and state Congress leaders greeted Manmohan Singh with governor MK Naraynan on his arrival here.

Of late, Didi, as the chief minister is popularly known, has been at odds with the Centre on a number of issues including the NCTC, FDI in retails and more recently, the steep hike in petrol prices.

However, Mamata joined Singh when he was at the Kolkata University in College Street campus for his acceptance speech at the inception ceremony of centenary celebrations of Indian Science Congress Association.

Here too, when she met the prime minister, Mamata complained to him about not cooperating ministries at the Centre, especially the finance ministry.

She also reminded him about the financial assistance from the Centre for her government. She reiterated her demands as she went to see him off at the helipad in the afternoon.

Later, expressing dissatisfaction over partial cut in the petrol price hike, Mamata requested the prime minister to ensure its complete rollback. “We are not happy with this partial cut in petrol prices by Rs2 per litre. When the crude oil prices are coming down in the international market, then why is there an oil price hike in India? Why shouldn’t the hiked prices be completely rolled back?” a close aide quoted Banerjee as saying.

“The CM has told Singh to see that there is a total rollback. He has said he will look into the matter,” the aide said.
