New Delhi: Heavy rains and subsequent water logging on Wednesday morning have thrown life out of gear in many parts of the country including Delhi, Millennium City Gurugram, leaving people stranded on choked up roads during the peak hour as traffic has been severely affected.
Also, Army Chief General Dalbir Singh was stuck in traffic for an hour. Heavy rains on Wednesday morning caused waterlogging in many areas and massive traffic gridlocks in the national capital, stranding people on the roads. Traffic helpline officials told reporters that they were flooded with calls of snarls and waterlogging across the city.
“Reports of heavy traffic congestion and vehicles being stuck on roads are coming from different parts of the city since morning. We have till now received more than 100 calls of traffic jams and waterlogging,” an official of the traffic helpline said.
Places hit by massive traffic congestion due to waterlogging include Moti Bagh, Wazirabad, Pragati Maidan, Azad Market, the stretch between IIT-Delhi and Munirka, Chirag Dilli, Punjabi Bagh, Karol Bagh, Dwarka, Shastri Park, Seelampur, Ghazipur, Najafgarh, the Nangloi-Mundka road, the Dhaula Kuan flyover, Greater Kailash II market, Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg, Barapullah flyover towards DND, Ashram Chowk, Ring Road Maharani Bagh, Lajpat Nagar and Sarai Kale Khan.
Following water-logging in several parts of the city similar to what happened on July 28, many places including Hero Honda Chowk, Sohna Road, Manesar, Udyog Vihar, old Gurgaon Road and a few areas in New Gurgaon experienced heavy traffic snarls on Wednesday. People going office from Delhi to Gurgaon reported that traffic was not moving an inch.
The Delhi police have issued an advisory to the commuters to be careful while on the roads since the visibility is very low. Many motorists have abandoned their vehicles and are wading through knee-deep water which has accumulated on both the carriageways of Delhi-Gurgaon road.
US Secretary of State John Kerry, who was interacting with students at IIT-Delhi, has mocked traffic woes in the city as he asked students, “Have you (students)come here in boats,?”
Meanwhile, American Embassy sources informed that US Secretary of State’s visit to three religious sites in Delhi cancelled due to heavy rains. Also, his event at IIT-Delhi got delayed by an hour due to heavy rains in the capital.
