I am equally concerned about corruption: Gogoi

GUWAHATI: On Friday Chief minister Tarun Gogoi criticized Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev for trying to protect themselves as the only two people in the country who are fighting against graft.

CM said, “They are not the only two persons concerned about corruption. I am equally concerned and I have proved it. No state government has sent as many cases of corruption – 10 in all – to the CBI as Assam.”

Team Anna cannot be the only civil society in the country that should be consulted by the government on the Lokpal issue, said Gogoi.

He said, “Neither the government nor Anna Hazare or Baba Ramdev can dictate the terms of the bill. This is a democracy where there is no place for dictatorship. In democracy, there are first consultations and then the approval by the Parliament.”

The CM in his reply to a letter sent out by the Centre to the CMs of all the states seeking their suggestions and views on the Jan Lokpal Bill, including whether the Prime Minister should be brought under its purview, has stated that he will toe the party’s line. The Centre on June 1 wrote to all the chief ministers in the country and the leaders of political parties seeking their views on issues related to the proposed Lokpal Bill.

“I have already sent my reply to the Centre. I have made it clear that I may be the chief minister, but I am also a member of the Congress, and so I will follow whatever stand my party takes on this issue,” he said.

Gogoi declined to give his individual opinion on the Centre’s letter. “I don’t want to comment. It is not a question of my personal view,” the CM told reporters when he was asked about his reaction on the contentious issue, which has seen sharp divisions between the government and civil society representatives drafting the bill.
