India beat Pakistan to win World Cup Kabaddi title
Ludhiana: India defeated Pakistan 59-22 in the men’s final to retain the title at the 3rd World Cup Kabaddi tournament played on Saturday night.
It was for the third consecutive year that India thrashed the rival in the final.
Tonight, the winning team got a prize money of Rs 2 crore while Pakistan would take home Rs 1 crore. The second runners-up, Canada, clinched the third prize of Rs 51 lakh.
Sixteen teams vied for a total prize money of Rs 6.29 crore.
The men’s final played here tonight was a repeat of the final of the women’s team, a one-sided match in which Indian eves thrashed Malaysia.
At the end of the first half in the men’s final, India was leading with a point difference of 34-9.
Throughout the match, India dominated the game and its raiders Gagandeep Singh Gaggi, Gurlal Ghanaur, Manminder Singh Sran and Sukhbir Sarawan bagged 10, 8, 8 and 7 points respectively whereas stoppers Ekam Hathur, Balbir Pala and Gurwinder Kahlwan scored 10, 7 and 4 points respectively.
Pakistan’s raiders Safeeq Butt and Mohammad Irman scored 5 and 3 points respectively while their stoppers Sujad Gujjar bagged 5 points respectively.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Deputy Speaker of Pakistan’s Punjab Assembly Rana Masood Ahmed, Pakistan Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullha.
On the occasion, Sukhbir Badal announced to increase the prize money for the women title from Rs 51 lakh to Rs 1 crore from next year.
Meanwhile, before the commencement of the final match between India and Pakistan, Chief Minister Badal honoured former Olympians of different games.
The Olympians who were honoured included Baljeet Dhillon, Varinder Singh, Sanjeev Kumar (all hockey players), Manjeet Kaur and Brigadier (retd) Labh Singh (both athletes), Dronachariya Awardee Sukhchain Cheema and Arjuna Awardee Balwinder Singh Fidda.
Earlier, Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif performed as the 15 day Kabaddi extravaganza drew to a close here.
Bollywood and Punjabi singers Sukhwinder and Diljit Singh Dosanjh, regaled the audience with their famous numbers. Famous satirist duo from Pakistan Irfan Malik and Hasna with their unique Punjabi jokes set the stage for final between the two neighbours.
