Live: Protests continue at Pithampur

The decision to shift and incinerate Union Carbide waste in the industrial town has opened a virtual can of worms

The ghost of the 1984 Bhopal.Gas Tragedy seems to have returned to haunt the state government as protests continue in Pithampur on Saturday leaving the ruling party open to Opposition attacks.

Though Chief Minister Mohan Yadav sought to calm tempers late on Friday night by saying that a decision to incinerate waste is yet to be taken, protesters reportedly indulged in stone pelting at Tarapur Village in the vicinity of the Ramky Enviro plant where the waste is currently stored.

Renewing its attack, the Opposition Congress too has cornered the state government while casting aspersions over the intentions of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Sources say that protesters regrouped at Tarapur on Saturday morning, pelted stones and smashed windscreens as they tried to breach the police cordon and prohibitory orders around the Ramky plant.
