Meghalaya Terror Outfit Claims to Be Receiving Help from ISI, Jehadi Groups
Terrorist outfit of Meghalaya the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has said that Pakistan’s ISI and jehadi groups are providing them assistance to fight the Indian state, said media reports.
“The ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) and several jehadi groups extended help to the GNLA but I refused,” GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma was quoted as saying by IANS over telephone from an undisclosed location.
A former DSP in Meghalaya, Sangma quit his job due to alleged harassment by his seniors and floated the GNLA.
Mostly, deserters from National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), the Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) and the Liberation of Achik Elite Force (LAEF) form the cadre of the outfit.
“We (GNLA) are not working against the interest of India but for the cause of Garo Hills within the ambit of the Indian constitution,” Sangma was quoted as saying.
He claimed that besides support from separatist organizations from Nagaland and Manipur, they had several ‘friends’ in China, Thailand and Myanmar, reports said.
Answering the query as to why he founded a terrorist outfit, he said that he was ‘harassed’ by his seniors, said reports.
“I submitted many representations to the government and the Meghalaya Police DGP (Director General of Police) but they never looked into my grievances. So I decided to float the organisation,” he was quoted as saying.
GNLA, formed in 2007, suffered a major setback last week when its founder and general secretary Novembirth Marak was arrested in Siliguri in West Bengal.
