Nipah Virus Restrictions in Kozhikode’s containment zones, no Friday prayers at Kuttiady Juma Masjid

With six confirmed cases of Nipah virus, Kerala has stepped up control measures to contain the deadly outbreak. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Thursday delivered the antibody requested by the state to combat the virus, while a mobile laboratory was also sent to ground zero to enable the state to test samples.

In a major relief to the state government, the 11 samples sent for testing returned negative results for the virus. A five-member central team comprising experts from the National Centre for Disease Control, RML Hospital and NIMHANS has been stationed in Kerala to take stock of the situation and assist the state government in the management of the Nipah infection. The ICMR’s mBSL-3, the first Biosafety Level-3 containment mobile laboratory in south Asia, will help early testing and detection of the infection at the district level itself.

In the wake of a Nipah outbreak in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, the ICMR has delivered the antibody requested by the state to combat the deadly virus. A mobile laboratory was also sent to ground zero to enable the state to test samples, reported PTI.

The monoclonal antibody was delivered in Kozhikode by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Thursday. The antiviral is the only option available to the government to treat infections, although its efficacy has not been clinically proven yet.

The ICMR’s National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune sent its mobile BSL-3 (Biosafety Level-3) laboratory to Kozhikode to test samples for the virus in the district itself after five cases, including two deaths, were recorded.

Restrictions still continue in Nipah containment zones in Kerala’s Kozhikode.

Secretary of Kuttiady Juma Masjid Mahallu Committee Zubair P told ANI, “In the wake of the outbreak of Nipah virus in our area…The district collector and police authorities have directed us to not gather people in the masjid. Complying with the orders we have decided to close the masjid until further orders. Friday prayers will not be held at the masjid today…We will co-operate with the government authorities to control this disease…”

Amid concerns over the Nipah virus in Kerala, 15 samples of those in the high-risk category in the contact list have been sent for testing, reported ANI.

The contact list contains 950 people of which 213 are in the high risk category.

287 health workers are also there in the contact list.

Four people in high risk categories are in a private hospital and 17 people are under surveillance in Kozhikode medical college.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar reviewed steps taken for containment of Nipah virus outbreak in Kozhikode, Kerala, from the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV), in Pune on Thursday.

Two deaths from the Nipah virus in Kozhikode took place on August 30 and September 11.

Kerala has shut some schools and offices this week as officials raced to halt the spread of the deadly Nipah virus, after two people succumbed in the fourth outbreak of the virus since the year 2018.

Affected gram panchayats in the Kozhikode area have been declared as quarantine zones.

Samples of 15 people of those in the high-risk category in the contact list have been sent for testing.

The health official earlier said that the contact list contains 950 people of which 213 are in the high-risk category. A total of 287 health workers are also there in the contact list.
