Oil pipeline leaked at Mumbai coast
MUMBAI: On Friday India’s state-run Oil & Natural Gas Corp said a “small” leak on one of its offshore pipelines had stopped, and it resumed production at oil wells shut earlier in the day as a safety precaution.
The leak had caused a slick about 1.6 kilometres (1 mile) long off the coast of Mumbai. ONGC said in a statement late Friday, “The leakage has been stopped. The matter is under control.”
The company said it expects the oil spill to be disbursed with 48 hours, and it will continue surveillance and monitoring jointly with India’s coastguard services.
The leak, discovered at about 08:45 am Friday, was about two kilometers from the Bassein oil and gas field off the western coast of India, about 80 kilometers from Mumbai, the company said.
ONGC said an oil spill disaster contingency plan has been withdrawn and the situation was “under control”.
“Our divers are at sea to assess the damage,” an ONGC spokesman told AFP.
The spill follows another slick last August off Mumbai’s busy coastline, after the Panama-registered MSC Chitra collided with another vessel and leaked oil which drifted towards the shore, damaging mangrove forests and marine life.
Earlier in the day, ONGC had diverted crude production to a different pipeline and closed connecting oil and gas wells to ensure safety, for a period of three hours.
Sanjiv Gopal, Greenpeace India’s ocean campaign manager on Friday called for tighter regulation of oil infrastructure and transport given the impact of oil spills on ecosystems, marine life and fishing.
Sanjiv said, “We are assessing the situation. Contamination of up to a mile-long of water will have localised impact on fishing and marine life.”
