Pawar Meets Pranab, Chidambaram; Ministers Say Modi Has to Go
Amid IPL controversy, Union Agriculture Minister and International Cricket Council president-in-waiting Sharad Pawar on Tuesday held discussions with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister P Chidambaram, with meeting concluding with a decision that Pawar would ask IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi to resign, said media reports.
Earlier in the day, BCCI president Shashank Manohar called on Pawar to discuss allegations of betting and financial irregularities against Modi, reports said.
Pawar is believed to have told Mahohar that Modi would go after T20 final, said reports quoting unnamed sources.
“We will take a collective decision. I don’t know anyone else’s opnion. It will be a collective decision and the governing council will take that decision,” Manohar was quoted as saying while talking to reporters after meeting Pawar.
Pawar said that the IPL Governing Council would take the decision on Modi’s exit, reports said.
According to reports, a final meeting could take place between Pawar and Modi on Wednesday.
Reports quoted sources as saying that the final decision on Modi’s ouster would be taken by Tuesday evening but ratified only after the IPL governing council meeting on April 26.
Manohar has reportedly provided some papers as well to Pawar giving details of land dealings done by Modi, said reports.
Most of the BCCI members, including president Manohar, Secretary N Srinivasan, and Congress MP and BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla, are united in their demand for Modi’s exit.
The others who are against Modi include IPL vice-chairman Niranjan Shah, BCCI vice-president Chirayu Amin and BCCI joint secretary Sanjay Jagdale.
However, Modi has got the support of former BCCI chief IS Bindra, Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association boss Farooq Abdullah and BCCI Honorary Treasurer MP Pandove.
The people who are the fence sitters include BCCI vice-president and DDCA President Arun Jaitley, and the former Indian cricket team captains – Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.
