PCPA Leader Sameer Mahato Arrested for Attack on Gyaneshwari Express
Sameer Mahato, leader of People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA), has been taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with last month’s Jhargram train attack, said media reports.
Mahato will be produced in the court today, reports said.
In the attack that resulted in derailment of 13 coaches of Mumbai-bound Gyaneshwari Express, nearly 148 passengers were killed and 200 injured.
After the attack, Home Minister P Chidambaram had said that ‘the needle of suspicion in the attack on the Gyaneshwari Express in West Bengal points to the CPI-Maoists or a front organization for the CPI-Maoists’.
Senior West Bengal police officers had also said that early leads suggested the Maoists were responsible for the tragedy.
