Period Film ‘Harishchandrachi Factory’ is India’s Oscar Entry
Harishchandrachi Factory, a Marathi film and debut movie of Mumbai-based theatre actor-director Paresh Mokashi, will be India’s official entry for the Oscars this year, said media reports.
Mokashi was quoted as saying by IANS on Sunday that the Film Federation of India has nominated his film as the country’s official entry in the Foreign Language Film category.
The film is about the making of Raja Harishchandra, country’s first full length feature film made in 1913 by Dadasaheb Phalke, the pioneer of Indian cinema.
A low-budget period film, Mokashi’s movie was completed in January. It has received a series of international awards and honours since.
“The film is to be released in India soon,” the 40-year-old said.
“I will start campaigning for my film for the Oscars from next month. Aamir Khan, Ashutosh Gowariker and Shwaas director Sandeep Sawant will help me in the promotion as they are experienced hands,” he said.
This is the second Marathi film after Shwaas to be nominated by India for an Oscar in five years. Shwaas was Sandeep Sawant’s directorial debut.
