New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched national air quality index to monitor pollution level in 10 cities here at a two-day Environment Ministry conference which will be attended by state environment and forest ministers.
The index will provide information on the quality of air in 10 major cities in the country, including Delhi and Mumbai. Delhi’s air pollution has been in focus in recent months, surpassing Beijing as the most polluted city in the world, with particulate matter 2.5 times the levels considered acceptable by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The conference is seen as a final step of consultations and taking states on board before bringing amendments in the existing green laws.
The state environment ministers and officials will brainstorm on proposed changes in the six environment laws apart from reflecting upon simplification of existing processes and ensure strict compliance of green norms.
The six laws that govern environment, forest and wildlife related issues are Environment Protection Act, Forest Conservation Act, Wildlife Protection Act, Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act, Air Prevention and Control of Pollution Act and Indian Forest Act.
The Environment Ministry has been under attack from conservationists, who allege that crucial environment laws are being compromised as the government tries to ensure ease of doing business by pushing for smoother environment approvals for industrial projects through a single-window clearance.
