Police Opens Fire at Naga Protestors, 15 Injured
Nearly 15 Naga protestors were injured when police opened fire on a group of tribes people on the border between north-eastern states of Manipur and Nagaland, reported BBC citing officials.
Police said that most of the injured were injured during the stampede, report said.
However, a group representing the Nagas claimed that at least two Naga protestors were killed in the police firing, said report.
It may be mentioned that the Nagar are perturbed as the Manipur government has forbidden Naga separatist rebel leader Thuingaleng Muivah from entering the state.
Muivah, the general secretary of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), is waiting at the village of Viswema near Nagaland’s capital Kohima with a convoy of NSCN leaders and activists hoping to travel to his village in Manipur.
The state government barred his entry as it fears separatist leader’s visit to Manipur could inflame Naga passions as the separatist rebel leader is slated to address many rallies in Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur.
The firing occurred at Mao town where tribes people had gathered.
Muivah’s NSCN wants all the Naga areas of Manipur to be merged into the state of Nagaland – a demand that upsets Manipu’’s majority Meiteis and other tribes like the Kukis.
The group has been negotiating with the Indian government for 13 years to find a solution to the country’s first ethnic insurrection.
