New Delhi: After labelling the Modi government’s demonetisation decision as “demonic and unsystematic,” key NDA constituent, Shiv Sena, on Tuesday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “historic decision.” Ruling out any rollback of the decision, Mr Modi, sources said, told the Sena leaders that he was accountable to Sena founder late Balasaheb Thackeray and would give his answers to “Balasaheb” when he joins him. Sena leaders met the PM and submitted a letter urging him to look into the hardship faced by the common man and “to make judicious use of the dense network of cooperative banks and allow them to participate in the demonetisation drive.”
Also, the BJP, in a resolution passed by its parliamentary party, hailed the move as a “historic, revolutionary and pro-poor measure,” which also said that the “bold initiative” taken by the government will achieve the intended objectives.
In an embarrassment for the BJP, its key ally Shiv Sena had criticised the decision and claimed that it had let to “financial anarchy” across the country. Sena leaders had last week submitted a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee about the hardships being faced by the people after the government’s decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Home minister Rajnath Singh had spoken with Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray last week, apparently to convey BJP’s unhappiness over its criticism of the government’s move.
Earlier in the morning, BJP parliamentary party in its meeting, hailed the demonetisation move and gave a standing ovation to the PM and also thanked the people for supporting the government’s “well meaning initiative, by bearing with the inconveniences with patience and discipline.” The resolution also thanked the banks and its employees for “rising to the occasion.” The resolution was moved by home minister Rajnath Singh and seconded by I&B minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.
According to the resolution, people are “queueing for a better India” and asserted that the decision is a “national project of cleansing the system and of great significance that will usher in behavioral and attitudinal changes encouraging honesty in personal and public life, particularly political life.”
