Sanchi’s Buddhist University to be given international-level identity
Bhopal: Culture Minister Shri Laxmikant Sharma has said that efforts will be made to given an international-level identity to Buddhist and Indic Studies University to be established at Sanchi. He said that Sanchi is a special place for Buddhists living all over the world. Madhya Pradesh government will extend every possible cooperation to scholars who will undertake research on Buddhism and other religions. Culture Minister Shri Sharma was addressing inaugural function of three-day Mahabodhi Mahotsav at Sanchi in Raisen district today. Minister of State Farmer Wealfare Shri Brijendra Pratap Singh was also present on the occasion.
Culture Minister Shri Sharma said that Sanchi was major centre of education and dissemination of Buddhism in ancient times. Best specimen of Buddhist art are found in Sanchi. The entry gate of Sanchi stoopa depicting life, incidents and anecdotes of previous incarnation, is important from archaeological viewpoint to its architecture. He said that roots of religion and culture are very deep in Madhya Pradesh. Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s initiative to establish Buddhist and Indic Studies University at Sanchi displays his commitment to peace during a period when religious and other discords are emerging in the world.
Minister of State Shri Brijendra Pratap Singh said that the university to be established at Sanchi will help understand Buddhism in present-day context. Shri Itu and Prof. Tanaka from Japan, MLA Dr. Prabhuram Choudhry and District Land Development Bank Chairman Shri Harinarayan Saxena were also present on the occasion. Mahabodhi Society, Sri Lanka’s Chairman Shri Chetyagiri threw light on the event’s outlines. Shri Chetyagiri said that much cooperation has been extended by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Smt. Sushma Swaraj, Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Culture Minister Shri Laxmikant Sharma in organising Mahotsav.
Followers of Buddhism from Indian and 11 countries are participating in the three-day Mahabodhi Mahotsav, which is held in November every year. Artistes from the country and abroad will also present cultural programmes during the three-day event.
