Science and Technology Minister Prithviraj Chavan now become the CM of Maharashtra

Former Science and technology Minister of state and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan was sworn-in as the 22nd chief minister of Maharashtra and Ajit Pawar of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as his deputy today.

Chavan’s name was formally announced after he met Sonia Gandhi Congress president at her 10 Janpath residence on Wednesday.

The oath of office and secrecy to them at the Raj Bhawan was administered by Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan. Both Chavan and Pawar met Governor Sankaranarayanan late on Wednesday night and staked a claim to form the new government in the state.

Chavan told reporters that he has the support of 170 MLAs in the 288-strong assembly, after his meeting with the governor. “The governor has invited me to form the next government,” said Chavan.

Prithviraj Chavan also visited ‘Varsha’, the official residence of his predecessor in south Mumbai before.
Outgoing deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal, RR Patil, Ganesh Naik, Jayant Patil, Laxman Dhoble, Jaidutt Kshirsagar and Sunil Tatkare were among the others who also took oath of office and secrecy at a function held at Raj Bhavan.

Ashok Chavan was also present at that time who was forced to quit over his alleged role in the Adarsh housing scam and union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Prithviraj Chavan was currently holding Science and technology, personnel, public grievances and pensions and parliamentary affairs ministries. He held several key assignments in the Union Cabinet also. Sixty four year old Chavan has won three Lok Sabha elections from Karad in Maharashtra’s Satara district. He became a Rajya Sabha MP in 2002.He was also closely involved in the passage of the Indo-US nuclear deal, was monitoring important Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) cases.
