Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Parliament on Monday in a wheelchair to take part in the Rajya Sabha proceedings, despite his ill health, to vote against the Delhi services bill that was subsequently passed in the House.

While the Opposition praised Manmohan Singh for his “integrity”, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called it “extremely shameful”.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha thanked the former prime minister for his presence in the House and said, “Today, in the Rajya Sabha, Manmohan Singh stood as a beacon of integrity and came especially to vote against the black ordinance. His unwavering commitment to democracy and the Constitution is a profound inspiration. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to him for his invaluable support. Thank you, sir.”

The attendance of the 90-year-old Congress veteran in Rajya Sabha led to a war of words between the Opposition and the BJP.

The BJP slammed the Congress and said, “The country will remember this madness of Congress! The Congress kept a former prime minister sitting on a wheelchair late at night in Parliament even in such a state of health, that too, just to keep their dishonest alliance alive! Extremely shameful!”

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate hit back at the BJP for its comments on Manmohan Singh’s presence in Rajya Sabha and said it showed the former prime minister’s “faith in democracy”.

Besides Manmohan Singh, an ailing Sibhu Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was also present in the Upper House.

In a setback for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 or the Delhi services bill, was passed in the Rajya Sabha.

The bill was passed with 131 votes in its favour, and 101 votes against it. The bill, which has been a point of contention between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Centre, was passed in the Lok Sabha on August 3.
