Singh Calls for Close Cooperation between BRIC Countries

Noting their richness in resources, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has pitched for close cooperation between India, Russia, China and Brazil in the fields of energy and food security besides harnessing potential in other fields such as trade and investment, science and technology and infrastructure, reported PTI.

In his address to the Brazil-Russia-India-China (BRIC) Summit in Brasilia, the prime minister said that the four nations can gain by sharing their experiences in the field of inclusive growth, report said.

“We are four large countries with abundant resources, large populations and diverse societies… We aspire for rapid growth for ourselves and for an external environment that is conducive to our development goals,” Singh was quoted as saying.

He contended that the people of the four nations ‘expect us to work together so as to bring the benefits of inclusive social and economic development to them’, said report.

Singh said that energy and food security are two specific areas where BRIC could work together, report said.

“Our grouping includes two of the largest energy producers and two of the largest consumers in the world. We can cooperate in both upstream and downstream areas, and in the development of new fuels and clean energy technologies,” he was quoted as saying.

Identifying BRIC countries as both large producers and consumers of agricultural products, Singh proposed they should consider introducing an architecture of food security that concentrates on increasing agriculture productivity, better land use, sustainable farming practices and agro-processing, report said.

He noted that there is huge potential for cooperation in areas such as science and technology, trade and investment, pharmaceuticals and infrastructure, said report.

“Investments in human capital will create new sources of growth,” he was quoted as saying.
