Singh Expresses Concerns over Activities of Sikh Separatists in Canada

Two months before the 25th anniversary of Air-India flight Kanishka, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed to his Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper his concerns about the anti-India activities of extremists groups operating from that country, reported PTI.

In his half-hour meeting with Harper on the sidelines of Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, Singh conveyed his concerns about surge in activities of Sikh separatists in Canada who are attempting to revive militancy in Punjab, report said.

The prime minister also underlined the need for monitoring such groups and in response, the Canadian leader assured that his government would do its best in this regard, said report.

Singh noted that the 25th anniversary of Kanishka bombing, carried out by Khalistani groups, would be observed in June, External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vishnu Prakash told reporters while briefing on the meeting between the two Prime Ministers.

The Indian Prime Minister remarked that ‘there was continued concern about the activities of extremist groups’ operating from Canada and hoped that their activities would be monitored by the Canadian side, report said.
