Students should use knowledge in society’s interest : Pranab

Bhopal: President Shri Pranab Mukherjee has said that knowledge-based economy is need of the hour. He said that along with expansion of physical infrastructure in higher education sector, development of culture of innovation and increase in quality are also needed. Shri Mukherjee was addressing the first convocation of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore at Indore today.
The president urged the first graduates of the university to inculcate habit of keeping learning everyday and every time. He said that society has invested on students’ education. Therefore, they should use their knowledge in the interest of society. He said that Indian Institutes of Technology and Central universities can create atmosphere for raising useful human resources and facing challenges successfully.
President Shri Mukherjee said that it was decided to expand Indian Institutes of Technology in the Sixties for development of human resources. He stressed the need for expansion of higher education sector keeping future requirements in view. He said that 2 crore 50 lakh students are pursuing higher education in the country and 1 crore more students will join it during 12th Plan. In view of it, expansion of higher education institutions is not adequate. The country has 659 universities and 33 thousand colleges. He said that percentage of admission is 21 in Germany and 37 in USA against 7 percent in India. He said that there is dire need to increase facilities, access and availability for expanding higher education. He said that students of remote areas can avail benefit of lectures through e-classes. Shri Mukherjee laid emphasis on more scholarships for higher education.
Referring to Indian economy, the President said that GDP is not disappointing. It grew at 3.5 percent during the Fifties, 5.5 percent in the Eighties and 6 percent in the Nineties. It has grown by 7.9 percent during the last decade. He said that work of poverty eradication has been done satisfactorily during last 2 decades. He said that the new generation needs to be courageous, self-confident and capable.
The President said that expansion of higher education, knowledge and skill is need of the hour. He expressed concern over the fact that no Indian university is included in the list of 200 best universities of the world. He said that once India boasted of world-famous universities like Taxila and Nalanda. These universities were set up much before Cambridge and Harvard. He said that India has talent and skill, which should be fully utilised. Shri Mukherjee said that only 3 Indian companies figure in 100 top companies in the world. Fillip will have to be given to innovations and researches for expansion of higher education. For this, public and private sectors will have work jointly.
IIT Board of Directors Chairman Shri Ajay Piramal said that existing economy holds ample opportunities for youths. They can bring about significant changes in the country and world. Improvement in living standard is necessary through development of knowledge and technology. Institute’s Director Dr. Pradeep Mathur presented its progress report. He informed about development of complex and academic achievements of the institute.
The President gave away medals to meritorious students. At the convocation, degrees were distributed and oath administered to students. Governor Shri Ram Naresh Yadav, Minister of State for Higher Education Shri Mahendra Hardia, former Union Minister Shri Suresh Pachouri, Dr. Nilesh Jain, faculty members and institute’s students were present on the occasion.
