Taslima ‘Lajja’ Nasreen Back in India, Seeks Visa Extension

Taslima Nasreen (47) has returned to India, seeking an extension of her visa. The controversial Bangladeshi writer, currently lodged at an undisclosed location, is under threat from Islamic fundamentalists for her feminist views.

A doctor by training, Taslima had earlier sought permanent residency in the country, but the government is yet to take a final decision on the request.

In 2007, the writer was dramatically bundled out of West Bengal following violent protests by fundamental Muslim groups there.

Since fleeing her Dhaka home in 1994, Taslima has lived in France, Sweden, the US and India.
