Thousands bid tearful adieu to Vilasrao deshmukh

Bhopal : Union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was on Wednesday cremated in his native village Babhalgaon amidst emotional scenes. Lakhs of people from Latur and nearby areas descended at Dayanand Vidyalaya in Latur where his body was kept for people to pay their last respect.

In attendance were a galaxy of leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Union ministers Sushilkumar Shinde, Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel, Vayalar Ravi, Rajiv Shukla, Mukul Wasnik, Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, his deputy Ajit Pawar and a host of Bollywood personalities.

Deshmukh’s friendly equations reached across political divide and hence it was not surprising that BJP president Nitin Gadkari and BJP leader Gopinath Munde, who incidentally enjoyed a good rapport with the former CM, were also present.

Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot and former Karnataka chief minister Dharam Singh had also come in to pay their respect. In fact so many VIP’s landed at Latur’s airport on Wednesday that Air Traffic Controllers had a tough time managing the air traffic.

The film fraternity was also visible not just because of Vilasrao being a film buff but also because of his son Ritesh being an actor. The actor’s friends, filmmakers Karan Johar and Sajid Khan were present along with Vivek Oberoi, Ashish Chaudhary and the entire family of producer Vashu Bhagnani.

Deshmukh’s eldest son Amit lit the funeral pyre at the family’s farm in Babhalgaon accompanied by his two brothers Dheeraj and Ritesh. There is talk that a structure could be built for Vilasrao at his final resting place
