New Delhi: Top leaders of key political parties in Maharashtra — Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party will head to Delhi on Monday as the political turmoil in the state stretches on.
In an attempt to arrive at a solution, the parties are set to hold high-power meetings that might help arrive at a possible formula into government formation in Maharashtra — the moves each of the two main alliances will now make.
While incumbent Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will meet Union Home Minister and BJP chief Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday, NCP chief Sharad Pawar will also be meeting Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi in the national capital.
Sources said that Devendra Fadnavis’s the meeting with Amit Shah will be to discuss aid from the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) to farmers affected by unseasonal rains across the state. But the political situation in Maharashtra, with BJP-ally Shiv Sena refusing to budge from its demand for 50:50 chief ministership is also expected to be discussed with the Amit Shah.
Simultaneously, NCP chief Sharad Pawar will head to Delhi and hold talks on lending support to Shiv Sena may also be discussed during a meeting with ally Congress’s chief Sonia Gandhi in the national capital.
Both Shiv Sena and BJP have been at loggerheads over the battle of “kaun banega mukhyamantri” since the assembly election results were declared on October 2.
While Shiv Sena has been adamant on the 50-50 seat-sharing formula with the BJP, the latter has denied making any such promises to the regional party.
The BJP believes that the Sena will come back for talks with them after November 4-5 as the Uddhav Thackeray-led party will have more clarity on where the Congress-NCP alliance stands vis-a-vis government formation, said sources.
The BJP emerged as the single largest party by winning 105 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly elections which were held on October 21, while its ally, Shiv Sena won 56 seats, which made it likely for them to comfortably form the government.
NCP won 54 seats in the assembly while the Congress won 44 seat in the 288-member assembly.
