New Delhi : Union cabinet on Tuesday passed the bill for reservation of SC and ST in promotions. The bill would be put in the House for clearance on Wednesday.
BSP chief Mayawati was championing the cause of reservation in promotion and leaders of BSP also protested outside the Parliament earlier in this session for its passage. Ram Vilas Paswan had joined her in this effort.
Samajwadi Party was dead against this bill and had voiced its concern to the Congress party. Ram Gopal Verma, the party ideologue said that SP is still opposed to the bill.
The passage of the bill in the cabinet is sure to lead to some political realignment among UPA constituents. BSP and SP mutually opposed to the bill stand on the opposite sides. Congress is expected top lean more towards BSP given the passage of the bill.
This bill has political implications and no party dares to come out in the open against the bill. Left Parties have already expressed its support while BJP is non committal given its political fall out.
Mayawati has meanwhile renewed her appeal to all parties to lend their support to the passes of the bill through the House.
Earlier , in all party meeting the idea of reservation in promotion could not be agreed upon. It was left half way but on Tuesday UPA government decided to pass it through the Cabinet.
Legal experts, however opine that it would be difficult for this bill to pass through Supreme Court scanner.
