Red Alert Sounded in Assam over Grim Flood Situation

Following heavy rains in catchment areas of the Brahmaputra River at the foothills of the Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam state government has declared a red alert anticipating floods.

The town where an alert has been sounded include Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Jorhat and Majuli. In addition, the National Disaster Rescue Force has been summoned for rescue operations.

Over two lakhs people in around 300 villages are affected by the overflowing river, said official sources.

In Majuli, an embankment was breached at Nayabazaar flooding Jengraimukh, Fuloni, Halodiati, Kherkotamukh and Nayabazaar areas.

In Lakhimpur, a 100-metre stretch of geo-fabric embankment was breached at Matmora affecting nearly 200 villages.

East Dhakuakhana, Matmora, Kherkota, Dangdhara, Dimoruguri, Kekuri and Dholpata were also submerged by floods.

Over 30,000 people have been displaced in the upper Majuli area. Offices, schools and other establishments in Majuli have been inundated with floodwaters.
