Central goverment would pay Rs 129 crore for disposal of hazardous waste stored at Union Carbide Factory Bhopal:response submitted in court

About 350 metric tonnes of waste has been lying in the Union Carbide factory ever since the Bhopal gas tragedy happened about 39 years ago. Now in this case, it has been said in the High Court on behalf of the Central Government that Rs 129 crore will be released to destroy the said waste.

The matter is pending with the Finance Department. A division bench of Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Amarnath Kesarwani asked the central government to present whatever progress is made in this regard with a duly affidavit. The next hearing on the matter will be on September 27.

Advocate Khalid Noor Fakhruddin, appearing for the petitioner, said that the petition is pending since 19 years. Both the governments are doing nothing in this matter. He has demanded that full compensation for the expenses incurred in waste management should be recovered from the accused company itself. Alok Pratap Singh of Bhopal had filed a PIL in the year 2004. After his death last year, the High Court is hearing the case suo motu.
