Bagless Days at MP Schools Every Month

Part of NEP 2020, bagless days will help scholars learn practical skills

Bhopal

Bringing much-needed respite to students in Madhya Pradesh, the state government on Sunday directed education officials to ensure that at least one Saturday every month will be a Bagless Day for students in classes 6 to 8.

On Bagless Day, students will participate in cultural, literary, and practical activities. The State Education Department has issued instructions to District Education Officers and District Project Coordinators to implement this initiative.

The National Education Policy 2020 calls for students to be introduced to 21st-century skills. To achieve this, one Saturday each month will be designated as a Bagless Day, focused on practical skills development.

School principals and teachers have been asked to prepare a calendar of activities for Bagless Day, with details to be submitted to the School Education Department.

The aim of Bagless Day is to prepare students as innovative, responsible citizens, fostering scientific thinking, creativity, communication skills, health awareness, sportsmanship, leadership qualities, and an understanding of India’s knowledge traditions and environmental consciousness.

The State Education Centre has outlined several activities for Bagless Day. In arts and crafts, students will engage in drawing, painting, clay toy making, mask-making, and creating items from waste materials. Literary and cultural activities will include folk songs, dances, short plays, poetry recitations, and storytelling.

To introduce students to modern farming techniques, topics such as poly farming, organic farming, medicinal plants, and modern agricultural tools will be covered. Additionally, field trips will be arranged to historical sites, small industries (such as beekeeping, poultry farming, and fish farming), and local institutions like banks, police stations, hospitals, and grain markets. Students will also visit units involved in handloom weaving and toy-making.

In addition to these activities, students will gain exposure to science, technology, environmental awareness, and participate in sports.
