Bhopal Shame! Mongrel Mauls Newborn Discarded at Piplani

Less than two months after a newborn baby girl was packed in a sack and dumped by the roadside, residents in the Piplani area of the state capital shooed away a mongrel that was mauling the corpse of a prematurely born neonate on Wednesday.
The ghastly incident took place at the 50 Quarters locality of the area. Police say investigations are continuing to ascertain the identity of those who discarded the infant.
Morbid as it may sound, the discarding of unwanted neonates is not new in Madhya Pradesh, as hundreds of similar cases are reported each year.
A paranoia stemming from the loss of honour due to unwed pregnancies is the primary cause behind the phenomenon.
In a recent case from October, a grandmother had contracted a nurse and a quack to secretly deliver a premature baby, who was later dumped by the roadside. She told investigators that her actions were driven by fears of social stigma.
Police reviewed CCTV footage from the vicinity of the spot where the baby was found by passers-by to zero in on the trio who had planned and executed the despicable act.
Piplani police are also checking nearby hospitals for records of all recent births. The postmortem report is awaited.
