World Down Syndrome Day is observed on March 21 every year. To spread awareness, health institutions will organise various programmes today. This year’s theme is ‘Improve Our Support Systems’, highlighting the need for better care and inclusion.
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder present at birth or soon after. It occurs due to an extra copy of chromosome 21, affecting brain and body development. Globally, around one in 1,000 live births is affected. The condition can be diagnosed during pregnancy through ultrasound and blood tests or after birth via physical examinations and lab tests.
Children with Down syndrome often have distinct facial features. They may experience delayed speech, motor skills, and learning difficulties. Special education and training help improve their abilities, while emotional and mental support for families is equally essential.
Bhopal’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr Prabhakar Tiwari, stated that under the National Child Health Programme, children up to 18 years old are screened for congenital disabilities, diseases, and developmental delays. Since 2014, Bhopal’s District Early Intervention Centre has identified 318 children with Down syndrome.
These children receive therapies and interventions to enhance daily activities, social behaviour, and academic performance. The centre also provides disability certificates through a medical board. It houses paediatric, dental, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and special education departments, offering daily services to children with intellectual disabilities, autism, and congenital heart diseases.
To boost confidence, children undergoing treatment participate in cultural performances, showcasing talents in music, dance, and sports. Many have excelled in these fields, proving that with the right support, they can thrive.
