BJP’s cow politics returns to haunt Shivraj Singh Chouhan

the BJP brand of cow politics has come back to haunt the Shivraj Singh government in Madhya Pradesh in an election year with the Kamdhenu Cow sanctuary -the only cow sanctuary in the country that was pitched as a possible solution for abandoned cows –pulling down its shutters on the bovine species in Agar.

The sanctuary has a capacity for 6,000 cows but has stopped taking cows beyond 4,000 because of lack of funds.

The red flag was first raised by Swami Akhileshwaranand, chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Cow Protection Board who had recently raised the demand for starting a separate cow ministry. The government obliged by awarding him a status of a cabinet minister but pulled the strings when it came to releasing funds for the cow sanctuary.

“We have put a stop on taking new cows after reaching the 4,000 figure because we do not have the resources. Farmers drive their cows away from their farms during this season and we had information that 10,000 such cows were being pushed towards the sanctuary from the Rajasthan border. In the absence of resources, if we allow more cows, it can lead to a catastrophe,” Swami Akhileshwaranand, Chairman Madhya Pradesh Cow Protection Board told India Today.

The Madhya Pradesh government has started many cash oriented schemes before the commencement of the model election code of conduct and in the absence of any fresh resources, diverted funds from ongoing projects and schemes. The government now is caught in a situation where it cannot even say no for fresh funds for the sanctuary.

“We have already taken 4,000 abandoned cows at the Kam Dhenu Cow sanctuary and if there is any scarcity of funds, the government will ensure that the same are arranged,” said Narrotam Mishra, Minister for Public Relations.

The Congress while attacking the BJP for its cow politics has alleged that the same is aimed at dividing people.

“Abandoned cows have become a menace on the roads. The government plays politics over cows but when it comes to doing something for them in reality, funds become an issue. The government has no dearth of funds for its publicity but they have no funds for cows. They just do politics in the name of the cow but in reality, they have nothing to do with them,” said Shobha Ohja, Congress spokesperson.

The foundation stone of the Kamdhenu Cow sanctuary was laid in December 2012 and it was opened for cows in September 2017. The main objective behind opening the sanctuary was to prevent slaughter of abandoned cows. The union government has even proposed to sanction 1,000 acres of forest land for such sanctuaries in each district of the 16 states that have banned cow slaughter but in reality, the only existing such sanctuary is crying for funds.
