CM’s initiative for making Bhopal a sport hub

BHOPAL (MPINFO): To place the state in the first row in the sports sphere efforts are being undertaken in a phased manner. Apart from expansion of sports infrastructure as per international standards, sportspersons are also being encouraged to enable them perform to the best of their talents in national and international tournaments. Players of Madhya Pradesh have brightened the state’s name through their excellent performances during the year 2011.

The results of efforts to make Madhya Pradesh a leading state in the sports arena have also started to come to the fore. In record-breaking performance, players of the state won 103 medals in National Games-2011 held in Jharkhand. These included 25 gold, 32 silver and 46 bronze medals. Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Shri Tukojirao Puar has announced to increase prize money for the winners.

Bestowal of Mukhyamantri Utkrishtata Puraskar-2009 on the Sports Department for innovative schemes and projects’ implementation has been among the major achievements of the year 2011. This prize was bestowed on the department for establishment of sports academies in the state and their excellent management. The Sports Department is also organising girls sports competitions in all the 50 districts of the state under Beti Bachao Abhiyan. First Olympic-level boxing ring of the country has also been built in Bhopal’s Tatya Tope State Sports Complex.

On the initiative of Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, 65th International Obaidullah Gold Cup Hockey Tournament was organised in hockey’s nursery Bhopal. Twelve countries including Malaysia and Bangladesh took part in the tournament. Besides, national-level equestrian, basketball, swimming, gymnastics and taek-wondo competitions were also organised.
