Digvijay Singh refuses to contest Lok Sabha elections: Said- I am a Rajya Sabha member, two and a half years left; There was talk of candidature from Rajgarh-Bhopal

Congress MP and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Digvijay Singh has refused to contest the Lok Sabha elections. On a question from the media in Khilchipur, Rajgarh, he said, ‘The question of me contesting elections does not arise because I am a member of the Rajya Sabha. I still have two and a quarter years.

In such a situation, who will be the Congress candidate from Rajgarh Lok Sabha seat? In response to this, the former CM said, ‘This party will decide.’ Digvijay had reached Khilchipur assembly constituency on Saturday to take a meeting of workers.

He is reviewing the organization in Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency. Three days ago, he had participated in the first round of organizational meetings in Biaora and Narsinghgarh assembly constituencies. On the three-day visit to Rajgarh district, on the first day he held meetings in three sessions with the block, mandalam, sector and booth level workers of Khilchipur.

After the crushing defeat in the 2003 assembly elections, Digvijay Singh had refused to contest any election for the next 10 years. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Bhopal. In this election, Digvijay Singh had to face a crushing defeat at the hands of BJP’s Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur. Now there were discussions going on about Digvijay contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Bhopal or Rajgarh.

At the beginning of the meeting, former minister Priyavrat Singh, who was a candidate from Khilchipur assembly seat, said, ‘Former CM Digvijay Singh has come to listen to all the things of the workers. Whatever suggestions you have, put them forward openly and explain the reasons why we lost the assembly elections and how we will strengthen the Congress organization.

Khilchipur city president Sanjay Kaushik, while advocating for fair elections through ballot paper, said, ‘There should be a protest on the streets for the EVM ban.’

There are 8 assembly constituencies in Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency. Of these, 6 seats (Berasia, Narela, Bhopal South-West, Govindpura, Huzur, Sehore) are held by BJP. Congress has MLAs in 2 assembly (Bhopal North, Bhopal Central). Congress has failed to win the Bhopal seat in the last 9 Lok Sabha elections. In 1984, Congress candidate KN Pradhan became MP.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur won by 364822 votes. He got 866482 (61.54%) votes. Congress candidate Digvijay Singh got 501660 (35.63%) votes. BJP’s vote share had decreased by 1.65% in the 2019 elections as compared to the 2014 elections. The vote percentage of Congress had increased by 5.24%.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Alok Sanjar won by 370696 votes. He got 714178 (63.19%) votes. Congress candidate PC Sharma got 343482 (30.39%) votes. In comparison to 2009 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s vote share increased by 12.24% in the 2014 elections. Congress’s vote share had decreased by 10.67%.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Kailash Chandra Joshi won by 65157 votes. He got 335678 (50.95%) votes. Congress candidate Surendra Singh Thakur got 270521 (41.06%) votes. In comparison to 2004, BJP’s vote share in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections had decreased by 14.46%. There was an increase of 11.29% in the vote share of Congress.

Why was Digvijay’s name discussed in Rajgarh?

Rajgarh has been the Lok Sabha seat of influence of Digvijay Singh and Congress. Congress is facing defeat on this seat after the Modi wave. Digvijay Singh’s younger brother Laxman Singh became the BJP candidate in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Congress fielded general worker Narayan Singh Amlabe on this seat. Digvijay campaigned vigorously for Amlabe and Congress candidate Narayan Singh Amlabe reached Parliament by defeating his younger brother.

There are 8 assembly constituencies in Rajgarh Lok Sabha constituency. Of these, there are BJP MLAs on 6 seats (Chachauda, Narsinghgarh, Biaora, Rajgarh, Khilchipur, Sarangpur). Congress is in control of two assemblies (Rajgarh and Susner). Presently Rodmal Nagar of BJP is the MP from here.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Rodmal Nagar won by 431019 votes. He got 823824 (65.37%) votes. Congress candidate Sona Sustani got 392805 (31.17%) votes.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Rodmal Nagar won by 228737 votes. He got 596727 (59.04%) votes. Congress candidate Narayan Singh Amlabe got 367990 (36.41%) votes.

In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Congress candidate Narayan Singh Amlabe won by 24388 votes. He got 319371 (49.10%) votes. BJP candidate Laxman Singh got 2,94,983 (45.35%) votes.
