A 3-4 month-old elephant calf died at the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Umaria district, Madhya Pradesh, on Sunday morning.
The calf’s death brings the toll of wild elephants at the sanctuary to 11 in less than a fortnight.
Wildlife officials said the calf had been undergoing treatment at the Tala Camp, where it succumbed to an illness that had caused its separation from the herd.
Forest patrols found the unconscious elephant in the reserve forest on November 8.
The evergreen Sal forests of Bandhavgarh have been at the centre of a controversy since four elephants were found dead in the Khatauli range less than two weeks ago.
Since then, six more elephants had died from what officials and wildlife forensics experts suspect is mycotoxin contamination in the Kodo millet grown in the area. The exact cause of the calf’s death is still under investigation.
